Get involved

Volunteers are the backbone of our organisation and are involved in all aspects of the organisation. We are keen to take on new volunteers. By volunteering with us you will meet a wide range of people from different cultures, learn new skills and have fun!

Recipe of the Month

Our recipe this week is Chakalaka.  This was made by our lovely volunteer Lesley at the Refugee week ‘pop up’ cafe event yesterday at St Rollox church.  This recipe is a dish from South Africa although it was shared with Lesley by a lovely lady from Zimbabwe.  It is very popular there.  This dish is also very popular in Springburn.  Thanks for sharing the recipe.

Chakalaka recipe.
2- 4 tbsp veg, sunflower or corn oil
1/2″ grated or finely chopped ginger
2 cloves garlic crushed
1 green chilli – finely chopped
1 tin chopped tomatoes or 400g fresh (chopped)
250g fresh or frozen sliced peppers
200g carrots – peeled and grated
1 heaped tsp curry powder
1 tin baked beans
salt and pepper
chopped  fresh coriander (optional)
* fry onions till lightly brown. Add ginger, garlic and chilli and fry for a minute or two. Add curry powder and fry for a further minute.
* Add tomatoes and grated carrots and cook gently till carrots are soft
* Add peppers and cook for further 10 minutes
* Stir in beans. Check seasoning and cook for further 5 minutes.
* Add coriander if using and serve
